What is an Independent Visitor?
Independent Visitors (IV's for short) are adults who give up some of their free time to visit and befriend children who are looked after by Children's Services and have little or no contact with their family. They are completely separate from Children's Services - that's why they're called 'independent'.
IV's are chosen to be reliable, trustworthy, safe and to have things in common with you. As far as we can, we will try to find an IV who will share some of your interests. We will also be looking for people who share similar backgrounds, things like ethnic origin, culture and religion and other things that might be important for you.
The IV doesn't replace your Social Worker or carer, but is an extra person who is there just for you. They visit because they want to and because they want to share some fun experiences and happy times with you.
